Review - The Crescent Golf Club

The Crescent Golf Club in Salisbury, NC is similar to the many public golf courses around NC. The Crescent provides an affordable round of golf on a course that has better than acceptable conditions, and beautiful scenery. That’s a pretty good combination.

Crescent sits along the river banks of the Yadkin River, and has a number of water features that come into play on 9 of the holes. This course for the mostpart is carved out of vast hardwood trees along the river flatlands. It is challenging, yet very playable if you hit the ball well.

The following are some of my favorite holes at The Crescent Golf Club:

#1 - A great par 5 to get started. While its not reachable in two except for the really long hitters, it provides a wide open fairway with little other trouble than a fairway bunker and two greenside bunkers.

#2 - Probably one of my favorite holes on the golf course, the tee shot requires a right to left drive. This should leave most golfers with no more than 150 yards into a tightly guarder, narrow and undulating green. This hole is fun to play, and is quite pretty.

#3 - The hardest hole on the course in my opinion. A pretty sharp dogleg left, it requires a very good drive. Even so, you are typically left 175-180 yards uphill into a very difficult green. Par is a great score on this hole.

#6 - A par 5 that can yield a low score. If you can hit an accurate tee shot, you are left with no more than 225 yards into a large green. This hole can easily be birdied, but if you hit it short or right, you are in the water and you can make a high number.

#8 - A devilish little par 3 that can make your knees quiver, especially if the wind is blowing. This hole measures only around 135, but the green is guarded by water to the right, a bunker short and a steep hillside and grass bunkers to the left. And, the green is severely undulated with a lot of slope.

#10 - One of the toughest par 3’s you will ever play. The green is very narrow front to back, but very wide. There are two gigantic bunkers guarding the right half of the green.

#13 - A tight uphill par 4 that you will be happy with par. On the scorecard, this looks like an easy hole. But it can be difficult if you don’t hit a good drive. There’s OB left, trees right and the hole is uphill all the way. The green has left-right slope and can be very tricky if you get above the hole.

#14 - A par 5 that you can let it rip. If you are feeling confident with your driver, you will like this downhill par 5. The long hitters can get home in two. This hole is defined by the creek in front of the green. It shouldn’t come into play, but it seems to jump up and catch your ball somehow.

#15 - Another difficult par 3. This is a longish par 3 over water to a well protected very large green. There can be 2-3 club differences in this hole depending on the hole location. Par is a very good score.

#16 - A well-protected with a steep uphill approach shot. There’s trouble from the get go on this hole - water and trees left, wild scrub right - and that’s just the tee shot! Then the approach shot is a blind shot uphill to a green that slopes right to left. Do not hit the ball left.

#17 - A very good par 5 with a difficult green. This is another par 5 that you can let ’er rip from the tee box. The second shot is then a relatively easy approach shot that should leave you no more than 100 yards. The third shot though is where it gets interesting. The green is a long narrow green that curves around to the right. Very difficult to get the ball close to the hole on this green.

#18 - A great finishing par 4 hole. This is a challenging finishing hole that can be difficult if you don’t hit a good drive. The green is well protected with grass bunkers, grass knolls, bunkers and an undulating green. A tough par if you really need one.

I love The Crescent Golf Club. It is a great public golf course and stands out above many of the other golf courses in the piedmont area of North Carolina.
