I’ll start off by saying my review is based off owning the uPro GPS unit for over a year. Prior to it I owned the Sky Caddie SG2 for a couple years. I can’t compare the 2 because they it’s like night and day. The uPro is sleek, lightweight, powerful and packed with features you would expect from a product Callaway put their name on. The uPro was not owned by Callaway when I bought it or they hadn’t put their name on the unit at that time. The unit measures 2”x4”x.65”, weighs 3.1 ounces and has a 2.2” color screen. It uses a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery (10-12 hour battery life) and the removable 1GB memory card can hold 50 courses. Where the uPro separates itself from the competition is having two options for viewing the golf courses (Basic or Pro mode). You can download the free version (Basic) of a listed course or you can buy credits and purchase full-color layouts (Pro) of the courses mapped by the uPro team. The basic mode is like most other GPS units giving you distances to the front/middle/back of the green leaving you to guesstimate where the pin is in relation to the distances. The Pro mode uses a color aerial photograph of the hole and even provides a flyover so you can visually see what lies in store for you if you’ve never played the course before. If you have played the course, you can turn that feature off to save time and battery life. In Pro Mode you can also use the cross-hair function to find a perfect lay-up distance on a par 5 or put the cross-hairs on where you think the hole is and get an exact distance to that point. The battery life is long enough to get in 36-holes if you don’t get stuck behind some hacks. The uPro team does a fantastic job of mapping courses giving you precise distances to hazards, bunkers and greens. One feature that comes in handy for those errant shots is because it’s GPS, you can get the distance to the pin from anywhere on the course. The uPro has a retail cost of $399. The Pro Mode courses are purchased using credits. 1 course is $10, 5 courses - $40, 10 courses - $60, 20 courses - $80, 50 courses $120 and 150 courses is $180. That means you’ll pay anywhere from $1.20/course to $10. Once you buy a course, it’s yours to keep and you never have to pay for it again. And since the memory card can hold 50 courses, it can be very beneficial if you play the same courses over and over. I’ve used my uPro for over a year now and I’ve never had any problems. If you’re in the market for a new GPS unit, make sure you put the uPro on your list. Happy (Birdie) Hunting,
