"Oh My God, It’s A Peach"

By: Jack Moorehouse

Golf is a super fantastic game and when things are going well it is just, absolutely the most delicious experience on earth! I have keen and exacting recall when thinking of some of my more successful golf shots. When I’m unexpectedly prompted or simply when the fancy takes me I slowly fall back into this warm, comforting pool of golfing nostalgia and relive, over and over again, the beautiful, uplifting and proud moment when, for once, one of my golf balls performs exactly how I had intended it to perform!

The moment the grooved face of my club met the dimpled ball I knew it was perfect! No impact judder, no solid thudding sound, in fact no anything other than wisps of fairway grass slowly falling back to earth. The perfectly measured, 230 yard surface-to-air missile homed in on the gently flapping yellow flag on the 12th hole, like an arcing laser. I knew the shot was good and therefore, for reasons of pure self-appreciation, I stayed with, and prolonged, the follow-through posture. Like some golfing dandy I craved the gaze of my fellow golfers, I needed them to know that I’d crafted something of absolute, yet fleeting, beauty? As the ball sliced though the thin summer air on its way to the green, I continued to hold the post shot pose to forcefully illustrate the full majesty of what’s to come? "Good God, It’s right on the pin" I tell myself! With steely eyes focused on the ball, and my heart in my mouth, I watched the ball impact the green. Hitting the green like a meteor hitting a distant planet, I watched the white speck pitch six feet past the pin, bounce twice, momentarily stop, and then gently, but purposefully, spin back and come to rest two foot from the hole. I knew it was a great shot and glowed inside accordingly while attempting to look simply pleased, and not smug, when complemented on my shot by my playing partners.

As I’m walking towards the green, I remember that, I’m already replaying, and enjoying, the whole scrumptious episode over and over again in my head. Once on the green, I repaired my pitch-mark and, in accordance with golfing etiquette waited for my playing partners to putt-out. I’m genuinely relieved, at this point, that none of my playing partners is nearer the flag than I. After such a glittering spectacle of shot making I’d have been a tad peeved not to have earned the privilege of putting-out last! As it so happened, my ball was the nearest to the pin and therefore, I did indeed have the honour of putting last. I carefully and earnestly lined up my golf ball up with the hole. A missed or lipped-out shot at this point would have delivered an unrecoverable crushing blow! I studiously addressed the motionless ball with my club and, blocking out all thoughts of disaster, I slowly drew back my putter and, in one movement, brought the head of my putter to bear on the ball before me. The ball, as if on rails, moved toward the hole, never once wavering, never once doubting its destiny and duly dropped perfectly into the back of the hole! "A birdie on the twelfth", I gasp. I could hardly believe I’d done it. Congratulations, from my playing partners once again ensued. I thanked them for their kindness and strode towards the thirteenth to start the process all over again!

This, for me, was one of those wonderful sporting moments that will live forever inside of my mind. As I write my story, and relive this moment, I can feel within me all of the very same feelings I had when I made that shot on that sunny Saturday in August 1985 whilst competing in my golf club’s annual Captain’s Day. I’m compelled to say that it still feels as good now as it did then! This brief and highly cherished moment in time is etched into my mind and always available for reply at a moments notice? I do hope this story of one of my more pleasing memories on the golf course has prompted you to think of one or more of your own? If it has...enjoy and always cherish those thoughts!

Now for the more serious part! Rather perversely, the key reason I highlighted this story is to illustrate the many, less than great, times we suffer on a day-to-day basis at the behest of this great and frustrating game called golf! To have your spirits raised utterly and completely, play beautiful golf! Hack around 18 holes of golf, playing like a dog and you’ll make yourself very miserable indeed. Nobody wishes to be miserable playing a sport of their choice and therefore, it’s maybe at these low points that one seeks to find a way out of this misery? Some will seek advice and lessons from the resident club professional, others may attempt to thrash it out on the driving range, listen to advice from golfing friends, take dvd tuition at home or perhaps enjoy a swing structure ebook at bedtime. Maybe a mix and match of all options? Who knows? The point is that one needs to find something that works for them. It doesn’t really matter what anybody else thinks about your chosen ’recovery’ route so long as it has a sound scientific base to it and, above all else, it feels as though IT WILL WORK FOR YOU!
